Renting Your Home, How to Get Started

There are two ways you can rent your vacation home.

  • You can list with a local rental specialist who will advertise and market your home.  They will write all the leases, collect funds and manage checks in’s etc.
  • Or you can list the house yourself online.  In order to maximize your rental income you do need to treat this like a job. If you don't have several hours a week to spend on it we highly recommend hiring an agent.

Once you have secured some tenants you need to arrange for the following services. You will need a caretaker, cleaner and lawn maintenance service to manage the property if you are not on Island to take care of it yourself. It is also advisable to have an account with a plumber and electrician in case of emergency. 

Your caretaker will check your property regularly during the year. They are also available for emergency calls from tenants etc. During the summer months your property will need regular lawn maintenance. 

The cleaners are usually scheduled to clean your rental home during rental turn-overs.  If tenants would like additional cleanings during their stay it is usually arranged at their expense.

The winter months. If you are not visiting the island  during the off season you can have the property shut down.  A plumber will come in and winterize the house. You can schedule regular checks by your caretaker during the winter months.
