VINEYARD HAVEN PUBLIC LIBRARY EVENT SCHEDULE
supported by the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library and by with
bequests from Helen Redding and Stephen C. Luce
Tuesday, June 22th 7:00 pm
Film screening: Saved by Deportation: An Unknown Odyssey of Polish Jews As cruel as Stalin's deportations were, ultimately they largely saved Jewish lives, for the deportees constituted the overwhelming majority of Polish Jews who escaped the Nazi Holocaust. "Saved by Deportation" not only tells this story, but it re-traces the path Asher and Shyfra Scharf traveled more than 60 years ago from Poland to Siberia to the former Soviet states of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in Central Asia. This film is an affirmation of human goodness during a time of great darkness.
Anita Hotchkiss, who made this journey herself, will join us and lead the discussion.
Peter Simon: Through the Lens Wednesday, June 30th 7:00 pm For over 40 years, Peter Simon has documented some of the world's most historic events from the protest-filled 1960's, hippie communes, nude beaches and the New Age Movement to the greatest names in Rock n' Roll, Reggae, Pop music; the action of Major League Baseball and the majesty of Martha's Vineyard. Through his multimedia presentation, Simon will speak honestly about his photographic art, privileged background, alternative lifestyle explorations, and an addictive personality that finally got the better of him and affected his relationships with family and friends.

Renowned island storyteller Susan Klein, and photographer, Alan Brigish offer fresh impressions of the Island of Martha's Vineyard, through their new book Now and Zen. Susan, who grew up on the island, tells of the way it was. Alan, with a perceptive sense of the moment, shows the way it is. Now & Zen, an exploration of communities, traditions, and transformations. Join us as Susan spins her tale of the Vineyard and Alan mesmerizes us with his photography. A reception will follow their program. Books will be available for your viewing.

Bruce Gagnon: Global Network Against Weapons &
Nuclear Nuclear Power in Space
Wednesday, July 14th 7:00 pm Bruce Gagnon is coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space. He offers his own reflections on organizing and the state of America's declining empire... Earlier in Bruce's activist career, he volunteered in Richard Nixon's 1968 presidential campaign. Today, as co-founder and coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, he fights the reach of corporate greed into space, which pits him against most Washington officials. His latest book is "Come Together Right Now: Organizing Stories from a Fading Empire". Join us for a Q&A session followed by a reception.

When Computers Look at Art: Image Analysis in Humanistic Studies of the Visual Arts
Tuesday, July 20th 7:00 pm
New computer methods have been used to shed light on a number of recent controversies in the study of art. For example, computer fractal analysis has been used in authentication studies of paintings attributed to Jackson Pollock, Vincent vanGogh and Perugino's Holy Family. How do these computer methods work? What can computers reveal about images that even the best-trained connoisseurs, art historians and artists cannot? How much more powerful and revealing will these methods become? In short, how is computer image analysis changing our understanding of art? This profusely illustrate lecture for non-scientists will include works by Jackson Pollock, Vincent van Gogh, Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Lorenzo Lotto, and others. You may never see paintings the same way again. Dr. David G. Stork, Chief Scientist of Ricoh Innovations, is a graduate in physics of MIT and the University of Maryland at College Park, studied art history at Wellesley College and was Artist-in-Residence through the New York State Council of the Arts.
Following Dr. Stork's presentation and Q&A session, there will be a reception.

2010 SUMMER SERIES
Town Trees of Edgartown Wednesday, June 23rd 10am - noon
Whether casting a welcome shade to passersby or providing a glimpse of beauty tucked away in a garden, the many glorious and mature trees of Edgartown help to define its charms. Amongst this mantle of green that envelops downtown are many unique and fine specimens, the famous Pagoda Tree being but one of the many that we'll "discover" during this arboreal amble. Please join collections and grounds manager Tom Clark for this informal and informative walking tour. $18/$15 for PHA members. Call to pre-register and for car pool and meeting location. 508-693-9426 Propagating Trees and Shrubs from Cuttings Saturday, June 26th 9am - noon
Cuttings produce plants genetically identical to the parent and were one of Polly's favorite ways for sharing superior plants. Join Jack Alexander, longtime Arnold Arboretum propagator, to learn the basic techniques for propagating woody plants from softwood cuttings. After an introductory lecture, participants will collect cuttings from the Arboretum grounds, and then return to the greenhouse to begin propagating your plant materials. You will leave with a small box of cuttings. Please bring a pair of hand pruners; a sharp knife and apron would also be a welcome accessory. $55/$50 for PHA members. Please pre-register; space is limited to 12. An assumption-of-risk release form must be signed to participate in this workshop. Beatrix Farrand: Private Gardens, Public Landscapes Wednesday, June 30th 7:30pm
Beatrix Farrand was one of the foremost landscape designers of the early 1900s. Born into a prominent New York family, Farrand eschewed the traditional social life of the Gilded Age to pursue her passion for landscape and plants. Many of her clients were members of the highest echelon of society with estates in Newport, the Berkshires, and Maine, but ultimately Farrand became the landscape designer for university campuses and public gardens. Join landscape historian and author Judith Tankard as for a look at the life and work of Farrand. "Beatrix Farrand: Private Gardens, Public Landscapes," is Tankard's eighth book on landscape history. In 2000 Tankard was awarded a Gold Medal by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for her role in the advancement of historic New England gardens. $10/$5 for PHA members. Sponsored by Middletown Nursery. Making Herbal Salves Tuesday, July 6th - repeats August 17th 1pm-3pm
Holly Bellebuono of Vineyard Herbs returns to PHA for her popular salve-making workshop. This fun hands-on workshop starts with a walk to identify and collect medicinal herbs and weeds on the Arboretum grounds. Then participants make their own oil infusions and beeswax-based ointments. Learn practical knowledge on when and how to use herbal salves and take home your useful creations. Supplies included. $45/$40 for PHA members. Please pre-register.
Observing and Drawing the Landscape Thursdays: July 8th and July 22nd 1pm - 4pm
Learn art techniques to record observations of the natural landscape with Diane Nicholls, painter, illustrator, and landscape historian. Lessons will include perspective, sketching, and developing personal "shorthand." Methods for keeping a daily sketch book will also be covered. Each class can stand on its own or taken as a series, the sessions augment each other. $36/$30 for PHA members per class. $98/$80 for entire series. Please register in advance and call for supply list. Ornamental Grasses: Old Friends and New Trends Wednesday, July 14th 7:30pm
Ornamental grasses are a hot item in today's gardens and many fit into that ultimate plant category - high visibility and low maintenance! When combined with superior perennial and annual companions, ornamental grasses can be used to create gardens of distinction: formal, petite, massive or dreamy. Join Art Cameron, Professor and Director of the Michigan State University Horticulture Gardens, to learn how to use ornamental grasses in your garden design. Cameronis renowned for his exuberant presentation style, beautiful slide shows and his passion for plants - especially ornamental grasses! He has designed several demonstration gardens on the MSU campus specifically dedicated to ornamental grasses. These unique gardens yield important information on the diversity, performance and maintenance of a wide range of grasses. The designs are an expression of his free-spirited approach to plants - and life! $10/$5 for PHA members. Sponsored by Jardin Mahoney. Bamboo Trellis Workshop Thursday, July15th 10am-noon
Bamboo trellises are popular in England and other parts of the world. Handy and versatile, they can be used for vegetables such as peas, beans, tomatoes, and flowering vines such as clematis. Plus they are good looking! In this class Art and Maureen Cameron will teach you how to construct a simple but effective seven foot by ten foot long trellis that will make your garden the envy of your friends. Materials included. Please pre-register, space is limited. $70/$60 for PHA members. Inspiration for Garden Design Wednesday, July
21st 7:30pm
Polly understood that good garden design came from working with your environment, noting, "You have to observe...study your land, study what is natural here. Let your immediate environment teach you." Join University of Delaware Professor and Horticulture Extension Specialist Susan Barton to learn how honing your observational skills and increasing your awareness of sense of place can put you in tune with the landscape and inspire design. Barton will explore natural and manmade patterns as well as look at the dynamics of the constantly changing landscape around us. The goal is to create gardens that fit the personality, climate and culture of the landscape in which they reside. In addition to her teaching responsibilities Barton works on promoting the use of regional vegetation in sustainable landscapes for both homeowners and the Delaware highway system. $10/$5 for PHA members. This lecture sponsored by Eden Market & Garden Center.

Home Inspections >If It Is Broken Fix It
Most houses have a few "little" problems, like leaking faucets, a stove burner that won't light, or electrical outlets with too much "spark". These defects may not seem very important--unless your house is about to go on the market.
We rarely have difficulty getting sellers to agree to paint, replace worn carpets or plant a few flowers in the front yard. These kinds of repairs obviously increase the overall appeal of the property. However, if any of the major systems in your home need maintenance, it is also prudent to have the necessary repairs made. Have your furnace, central air-conditioning system, plumbing and wiring checked as part of your pre-marketing efforts. The best rule is--if it's broken, fix it!
The purchase agreement requires that a house be conveyed with all the systems in working order, and most buyers will bring in a home inspector to identify any potential problems. During the period of time between the "meeting of the minds" and the removal of the inspection contingencies, the buyers are the most vulnerable to an attack of buyer's remorse. This is also the time when anything that hasn't been repaired could become a major issue.
